Mission Fields 1920-1949.

This series comprises approximately 320 black and white photographs of the Norwegian Lutheran Church in America/Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC) mission fields in Colombia, Madagascar, and South Africa from c. 1920-1949. Subject matter of these photographs includes villages, churches, missionaries, scenes, and families. Most of the photographs are undated. They were used in the ELC publication The Missionary. Each photograph is assigned a number (e.g., C1, M1, A1). These are handwritten in red ink on the back of each photograph. For photos pertaining to Colombia and Madagascar, there are partial identification lists. The information in the lists was obtained from the backs of identified photographs. The photograph's number on the list corresponds to the number written on the back of the image. Even though partial lists are provided, it is best to look at the identification as it appears on the actual photographs. In many instances, the identification contains more information. These photographs were originally mounted in an album in their numerical sequences, but for preservation purposes were removed from the brittle, acidic pages by a previous archivist. Files are arranged by alphabetically by country.
